Wigton Board of Guardians

The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday last at the Board-room, Queen’s Head Hotel, Wigton. Mr W DONALD presided.

The Diet at the Workhouse. The clerk read out the following:

Class 2 are not dieted in accordance with the dietary table at breakfast and supper as reported after the audit of the accounts for the half-year ended at Michaelmas, 1879.

Mr LOWTHER (workhouse master) stated that any departure from the usual dietary had been made in accordance with the instructions of the medical officer. All persons over 60 years of age could claim tea and brown bread, instead of porridge and milk. – Mr WISHART moved that the workhouse master adhere to the dietary table, except orders were given to the contrary by the doctor, such order to be entered in the doctor’s book. – The Chairman seconded the motion, which was agreed to.

Vagrant Ward Plans.

The Clerk reported that Mr MARK had not been able to get the vagrant ward plans altered as he could have wished, but he had promised to let the Board have them by the next fortnightly meeting.

The Clerk’s Salary.

Mr BOUSTEAD moved that the clerk be paid £10 per annum as clerk to the School Attendance Committee: £15 as clerk to the Rural Sanitary Authority: and £10 for providing the registrar’s office. - Mr Wishart thought that £10 was a lot to pay for a registrar’s office; it would be as much as Mr BENSON paid for the whole of his office. He thought a reduction of £2 10s should be made. – Mr Benson said he paid £15 per annum for his office, and then there were the rates and furniture and other things to provide. – Mr Wishart: Furniture is very cheap now. A few pins and nails and such like things are all that is required for such a room. – Mr W HORNSBY seconded the motion, which was agreed to.

The Balance at the Bank.

The Clerk said that the balance at the bank to the credit of the Board was £897, and £100 had been paid in that morning.
