Accident to a child at Harrington. - On Friday evening a little girl named Constance Jane TRAGARTHA fell upon the tramway opposite Harrington harbour as some bogies of pig-iron were being shunted. The wheels of one of the bogies passed over one of the poor girl’s hands, taking off the fingers.

Whitehaven Guardians. – The usual meeting of this Board was held yesterday, at the Union-hall – Mr HODGSON in the chair – when a letter was read from the Local Government Board, requesting the guardians to take precautions for having nurses and others re-vaccinated in case of an outbreak of smallpox. A fatal case of typhoid fever had occurred in Sawyer’s-court, and instructions to attend to it had been given to Mr BERTRAM, the sanitary inspector. The balance to the credit of the Board was £2, 321.

Accident. – Yesterday afternoon a serious carriage accident happened in Lowther-street, near the Castle. Mr Henry GLAISTER, of Longlands, was in a conveyance the horse attached to which ran away. He was thrown out and very seriously injured, and was taken to the Whitehaven Infirmary.

Alleged Perjury. – At the Whitehaven Police-court yesterday, John McCOURT and William McCOURT, of Marlboro-street, Whitehaven, were charged with having committed perjury at Whitehaven Police-court on Thursday, in the hearing of a case against the prisoners’ father of having had his house open during prohibited hours on the previous Thursday. When the case was heard three policemen swore to seeing 35 men in the public-house on Sunday morning, and the prisoners, who were in the house at the time, denied seeing the men there, and also stated that they had seen no drink sold. – Mr W W LUMB prosecuted on behalf of Superintendent BIRD; Mr W PAISLEY appeared for William McCourt; and Mr ATTER for John McCourt. Three witnesses having been examined for the prosecution, the case was adjourned till Saturday.
