Cockermouth and District News Pic-nic at Piel Wyke. – Yesterday afternoon Mr J BOWES, of the Pheasant Hotel, held a pic-nic in a field called Castlehow, near Bassenthwaite Lake. A special train from Cockermouth conveyed a large number of pleasure-seekers to the pic-nic. Refreshments were provided by Mr Bowes, and music for dancing was supplied by the Cockermouth Volunteer Brass Band, but the enjoyment of the pic-nicers was greatly marred by the unfavourable weather.
Cockermouth and District News Presentation to Mr Lloyd WILSON. – On Monday evening last, Mr Lloyd Wilson, of Broughton Grange, was presented on the occasion of his marriage with a splendid gold timepiece and ornaments to match by the officials and workmen of the Broughton Moor and Flimby collieries. The timepiece, which is from one of the best manufacturers in Paris, is of massive gold, and ornamented by designs of flowers interwoven with a beautifully executed little picture in front. The timepiece bears the following inscription: - "Presented to Mr Lloyd Wilson as a token of respect by the officials and workmen of the Broughton Moor and Flimby Collieries, on the occasion of his marriage. May 23rd, 1882." The ornaments are made to match the timepiece, being of solid gold, and decorated in a similar manner.
Cockermouth and District News Wesleyan Meeting at Eaglesfield. – The Wesleyan Methodists of Eaglesfield held a social tea meeting on Friday night to give a fitting farewell to Mr GAWTHORP, who has been holding revival services there for a fortnight. This is the last place at which this earnest evangelist intends holding services during his present visit to West Cumberland. The tea on Friday night was attended by as great number of Mr Gawthorp’s admirers from different parts of the surrounding district. The tables were presided over by Mrs WATSON, Miss TIFFEN, and Miss FOX. After tea a sermon was preached by Mr Gawthorp, who, it is understood, intends to proceed immediately to a college in Yorkshire to spend a few sessions in study.
Cockermouth and District News Cockermouth Board School. – The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Saturday in the Public-office. Present: Messrs J BROWN (in the chair), W L ALEXANDER, H FISHER, D FIDLER, and J FEARON. The Chairman asked Mr Alexander if the Visiting Committee had, as requested at the last meeting of the Board, seen the parents of the children who some weeks ago were sent to school in a filthy state. Mr Alexander said they had been unable to do so. The Chairman inquired of the acting-clerk if any communication had been received from the clerk to the Harrington School Board, with reference to the conference of School Board delegates on the question of the appointment of a county inspector of schools. The Acting-clerk said nothing had been received form (sic) Mr TOLSON, Clerk to the Harrington School Board. The Chairman, after reading the minute of a special meeting of the Board called to consider the advisability of closing the Cockermouth Board Schools in consequence of an epidemic of measles, said they did not think it was necessary to issue an order for the Board to close the schools, as it could be discussed at the present meeting. Mr Brown asked if a medical opinion on the subject had been obtained. It was resolved not to order the schools to be closed at present, as the holidays would commence in a week, but in the meantime, should the epidemic become worse, the teachers were to have power to close the schools, and deduct the time at the end of the holidays. Mr Fearon proposed that a precept on the overseers for £150 for School Board purposes be issued. The Chairman seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Fearon said the Board were £20 short of meeting their accounts that day, but as some of the accounts were not due for a week, they might be able to tide over the difficulty. There was no other business of importance before the Board. |
