MAGISTRATES' OFFICE. COURTS, CARLISLE, Dec. 30. -- Present. W. HODGSON, Esq., the Revs. John HEYSHAM, W. REES. -- Sarah KENNEDY was convicted of an assault upon Ann GIBSON, on Christmas Day, and was bound over to keep the peace for six calendar months. -- John BELL was charged, by John FOSTER, with riding on his cart without reins, on the 16th December, so as to have no command of his horse, in consequence of which Foster's coal cart was damaged by a collision with that of the defendant, to the amount of 10s. The evidence was exceedingly contradictory, and the magistrates dismissed the case. -- Abram HODGSON was convicted of an assault upon John JOHNSON, at Holme Wrangle, near Armathwaite, when the latter attempted to take him into custody for illegally fishing in the river Eden. He was fined 20s. and costs, and in default he was ordered to be imprisoned for one calendar month with hard labour. The same defendant was charged, with Robert HODGSON, his son, by Mr. George RELPH, with fishing for salmon in the river Eden, on the night of the 29th December, during the close season. The offence was fully proved, by John JOHNSON and Edward ATKINSON, and the defendants were convicted in the penalty of £5, and in default were ordered to be imprisoned with hard labour for two calendar months. The imprisonment of Abram HODGSON for the assault to commence after the expiration of the two months.
