Page 4 of 8 Current Events ___ By the overwhelming majority of 1,725 votes, Mr. MILVAIN has been returned as the member for Hampstead in succession to Mr. Brodie HOARE, who had held the seat in the Conservative interest since 1888, when he was elected in room of Sir H. T. HOLLAND, who was then raised to the peerage under the title of Lord KNUTSFORD. The special correspon- dent of the "Manchester Guardian" telegraphed on Thursday night that the prospects of Mr. ROWE, the Liberal candidate, were improving, and that the belief prevailed--probably in Rad- ical circles; although the correspondent did not say so--that he had at least "a good sport- ing chance." But before the poll closed on Friday evening all that the Radicals could hope for was that the majority against their candidate would be less than a thousand. Even that consolation was denied them' for when the votes were counted, it was found that Mr. MILVAIN had received 3,843, while only 2,118 had been cast for his opponent. Mr. MILVAIN'S majority was, in fact, larger than that obtained by the Conservative candidates at any election which has taken place since the con- stituency was called into existence by the Redis- tribution Act of 1885. Those of our readers who had the pleasure of listening to any of the speeches which Mr. MILVAIN delivered when he unsuccessfully opposed Sir Wilfrid LAWSON in the Cockermouth Division in 1895, need not be told that he has a per- fect grasp of political questions, or that he will be an acquisition to the debating power of the House. Mr. MILVAIN represented Durham from 1885 to 1892. *************** |
