********** Thursday, January 30 Cycle lamp time at Whitehaven at 5:46 p.m. Moon rises at midnight. ___ 1649--Execution of Charles I. ********** ********** Saturday, February 1 Cycle lamp time at Whitehaven from 5-50 p.m. till 7-4 a.m. ___ 1901 - The body of Queen Victoria was removed from Osborne House, carried by Highlanders and Bluejackets, to the Royal yacht "Alberta" and conveyed across the Solent between an imposing line of British and foreign war vessels, each warship saluting as the "Alberta" slowly steamed along. Portsmouth was reached at 4-30 p.m., and the yacht was moored in the harbour during the night. ********** Friday, January 31 Last quarter of the moon at 1-9 p.m. ___ 1606 - Guy Fawkes hanged. 1842 - " A splendid new ship was launched from the building yard of Messrs. Robert RITSON and Co., at Maryport, called the measurement, and intended for the Sing- apore and China trade. She is named in compliment to Mr. BUCKHAM, of White- haven, one of the largest shipowners in the country." ********** Sunday, February 2 Sexagesima Sunday. Candlemas Day. This day, according to several traditional sayings, has an inti- mate connection with the weather. One of these sayings is as follows:-- "If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, Winter will have another flight; But if Candlemas Day be clouds and rain, Winter is gone, and will not come again." Moon rises at 2-45 a.m. ___ 1901 - The funeral day of Queen Victoria. At 8-30 a.m. the remains were placed in a train at Portsmouth for conveyance to London, which was reached by 10-50. Placed upon a gun-carriage adapted as a funeral-car, the coffin was drawn by eight cream-coloured horses which had been used in the Jubilee procession of 1897. The streets were filled by millions of the late Queen's subjects eager to pay their last tribute of respect to their be- loved Sovereign. Paddington was reached by 12-30, and the Royal train conveying the coffin of the late Queen and the ill- ustrious mourners reached Windsor at ten minutes after two.
