THE PROPOSED STY HEAD ROAD. A meeting in furtherance of the proposed road over Sty Head Pass was held at Keswick on Saturday. Mr. R. D. MARSHALL presided, and among those present were the representatives of the Keswick Urban District Council and the Whitehaven Rural District Council, as well as representatives from Bowness and Windermere. Mr. R. MUMBERSON, chairman of the Keswick Urban District Council, proposed a resolution recognising the great importance to the Lake District and the surrounding country of an easy means of communication between Borrowdale and Wasdale, pledges itself to give a hearty and active support to any well considered plan for such road, and will appoint a committee with view of canvassing not only the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and Lancashire, but of reaching some at least of the thousands who yearly visit this country, in order to collect the money required to meet the cost of the scheme in addition to the funds to be contributed by the Cumberland County Council and other authorities. The resolution was seconded by Mr. J. MUSGRAVE , Wasdale Hall, who referred to the project as an admirable was of commemorating the Queen's extraordinary reign. The cost of the road was estimated at £10,000, and the County Council had promised £5,000. Messrs. W. H. ATKINSON, Keswick, J. B. BADDELEY, and J. HOLLAND, Windermere, supported the resolution, which was carried unanimously. A committee was appointed, and subscriptions were announced in the room amounting to £692. |
