SUICIDE OF A WHITEHAVEN WOMAN. The body of a woman, which was afterwards identified as that of Mary Jane COSKERY, 32, wife of James Leech COSKERY, resident at 14, Schoolhouse-lane, Whitehaven was discovered on Thursday evening, by Thomas RIDLEY, North Wall House, floating in the sea off the North Wall. Information having been given to the police, the body was recovered from the water, and on Friday, at noon, and inquiry was held at the Wellington Inn, West Strand, by Mr. Gordon FALCON (the Coroner for West Cumberland) into the circumstances attending her death. James Leech COSKERY said that he and his wife had been living apart for over four months, the latter during this period having lived with her sister at Askam-in-Furness. She came to Whitehaven by the last train on Wednesday evening, and saw witness on Thursday morning whom she had told she had come to see the children, three he had at home a a fourth was away. They had no quarrel. They did not separate owing to the intemperance of the deceased, nor had he ever seen her the worse for drink. Ann Jane MOORE, a neighbour, stated that the deceased had breakfast with her on Thursday. Margaret WALLACE, 155 Queen-street, deposed that the deceased visited her later in the day and had dinner and tea. She left saying that she intended to go and get an order for the workhouse. She made no threat, but remarked that rather than live as she had been, she would be lying still. Deceased seemed very low spirited. Thomas RIDLEY and Sergeant TOMLINSON gave evidence of a formal character, the latter remarking that the deceased was on the streets all Wednesday night. A silver plated brooch was all that was found on the body. -A verdict of "Found drowned" was returned. |
