POLICE INTELLIGENCE WHITEHAVEN. - Monday. ****** Mary MOORE (30), married, was charged with having stolen on the 14th inst., a dolly stick, the property of Isabella BARWISE, Plumblands-lane. James DIXON (13), stated that he was asked by the defendant to sell the dolly stick, for which he was to receive a penny. He got eightpence for it. Defendant was sent to prison for two months with hard labour. ****** Henry FINLAY (17), James JOHNSTON (14), Edward WATSON (15), Robert SPENCE (11), Alex. CHAMBERS (12), and John ROAN (11) were charged on the information of Joseph GIBSON, watchman, in the employ of Whitehaven Colliery Company, with having stolen a quantity of coal off a wagon at the wet dock, on Saturday. Previous convictions were reported against FINLAY, JOHNSTON, WATSON and SPENCE. The former was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment, and JOHNSTON and WATSON were each fined 5s. The three other prisoners were each ordered to receive six strokes with a birch rod. ****** James M'GRATH (26), collier, charged with being drunk and disorderly at the Welsh Arms, Tangier-street, on the 2nd inst., was fined 10s. ****** James SPENCE (30), collier, was summoned on a like charge, and was ordered to pay 15s., or 14 days imprisonment in default of payment.   POLICE INTELLIGENCE WHITEHAVEN. - Thursday. ****** Mr. J. T. ANDERSON applied on behalf of Mr. ROBINSON, Globe Hotel, for an occasional license at the Town Hall, on the 22nd inst., in connection with the Yeomanry Ball. - Granted. ****** Extension of hours from 10 p.m. on February 5th to 3 a.m. the next morning, was granted to Wm. HINDE, "Horse and Farrier," Gosforth, the occasion being the annual village ball. ****** A temporary license was granted to Robt. WATSON, farmer, Santon Bridge, in respect of the "Lutwidge Arms," Holmrook. ****** Agnes WELSH (50), married, was charged with using obscene language at Gale-Back Lane, on the 25th ult. - Fined 10s. ****** Ellen RICKS, wife of a music hall artiste, was convicted on a similar charge to the preceding one, and fined 10s. ****** John RODGERS (51), labourer, Harrington, was summoned for discharging a gun at the Quays, Harrington, on the 8th inst. Defendant had a gun license. The Bench said this did not permit prisoner to discharge his gun anywhere, and as the ground at the Quays was not waste land, he would be fined 10s. - Judgment accordingly. ****** Wm. Hy. FINLAY, who was summoned for failing to contribute to the maintenance of his son at the Industrial School, Cockermouth, was discharged, prisoner stating that he had only worked four days and three quarters during the last month. ****** John M'ALLISTER (30), collier, was fined 30s. for stealing on the 12th inst., a quart bottle of sherry valued at 4s., the property of Agnes BROWN, Ship Inn, Market Place. Defendant's mother (excitedly, as the prosecutrix left the court with Sherry): Give me that bottle, he's paid for it! (Laughter.) ****** John TURNBULL, Cleator, land agent to Mr. Jonas LINDOW, was charged at the instance of the Inland Revenue Commissioners, with keeping an unlicensed carriage. Mr. PRINCE (for the prosecution) stated that this condition of affairs had been extended over four years. Mr. CHAPMAN, representing the defendant, admitted the facts of the case, and explained that his client had previously been employed by Sir Wilfrid LAWSON, and the custom there was that the licenses were paid out of the estate. Mr. TURNBULL had been under the impression that the license in the present instance was being paid for by the Messrs. LINDOWS' estate. Defendant was fined £3 (duty for 4 years), without costs.
