LOCAL NOTES HAILE. At a recent Radical caucus held in the village, at which a deputation from Whitehaven was present, it was agreed, on the casting vote of the Chairman, to pass a resolution of no confidence in Lord Rosebery, on the ground that he is now spoken too highly of by the Tories. ****** An epidemic of influenza has spread over the district centred by Beckcote and Strudda Bank Farms. The Egremont doctors are attending patients in almost every house. ****** Preparations have been made at the Haile Hall for the visit of Captain and Mrs. POSONBY. ****** The sportsmen in the neighbourhood are pleased to learn that there is a probability of a stag hunt being held shortly. ****** A well know resident gave a supper to his friends the other night, and the chief dish was a cow's heart fried. ****** The heap of unsightly stones in the churchyard is being removed. ****** The concert recently got up by the vicar, in aid of the school, resulted in a balance of £10. A sum of £12 is still required. ****** There is some friction between the vicar and the managers of the school. The concert referred to was got up by the vicar in opposition to one proposed by the other managers, who intend to get up another to raise the amount still needed. ****** Mr. Stephen NICHOLSON won a bell at a recent raffle. ****** At a meeting of the Parish Council on Saturday, the principal business was the passing of Mr. TYSON's account for the mason work of the "duck pond." The amount was £3 19s., which would have been much better spent if it had been scrambled for by the village scholars. This muddle will have a good deal to do with the election of the next Parish Council. |
