Page 1 of 3 SHORT LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** The Hon. F. HOWARD and his lady arrived at their beautiful seat, Levens Hall, last week, to sojourn during the shooting season. ****** We understand that a meeting for the promotion of the Workington and Cockermouth Railway will be held at Workington to-day, to receive and consider the report of George STEPHENSON, Esq., engineer, who has surveyed the line. There can be no doubt of the success of the undertaking. ****** The Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, Lord Alfred CHURCHHILL and Lady Louise, left Braithwaite's Hotel, Longtown, on Monday, the 22nd instant, where they had been sojourning for a week, enjoying the healthful and salubrious air of Longtown and its vicinity. The Duke and Lord ALFRED, frequently amused themselves with fishing in the Esk during their stay. ****** At the Insolvent Debtor's Court, Lancaster, last week, Thomas BIRD and Adam BIRD, the two persons who claim to be heirs-at-law, of Brougham Hall, were brought up. They were confined for the costs of the suit with Lord BROUGHAM, but were not opposed, and therefore discharged forthwith. ****** The Lord Bishop of Carlisle will preach on Sunday night, the 28th inst., in Stanwix Church, a sermon on behalf of the National Schools of that parish.
