WORKINGTON LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday evening last at the Board-room, Washington-street, Workington, MR. BOWES presided, and the other gentlemen present were : MESSRS WHITFIELD, SMITH, CARRUTHERS, IREDALE, MILBURN, RICE, and MR. WARWICK (Clerk). LODGING-HOUSE SUPERVISION. The CHARIMAN moved that the local bye-laws issued by the Local Government Board with regard to common lodging houses be adopted by the Board. He did not think he need say anything on the subject except that it seemed desirable they should have bye-laws for the regulation of lodging-houses; for at the present time there was nothing done as regards the sanitary state of these houses. A difficulty arose at the last meeting which induced him to move that the bye-laws be adopted. Some members thought the bye-laws were not necessary when the police had the regulation of the lodging houses. MR. WARWICK gave his opinion at the last meeting, and since then he had made inquiries of the police, and would report the result of his inquiries. The CLERK reported that the police visited the lodging-houses merely to obtain the names of the lodgers, and to assist them in making up the number of tramps passing through the town. Looking after the sanitary state of the house devolved upon the Urban Authority. MR. RICE: If we adopt these bye-laws, will they give the inspector any control over the number they admit into the houses? The CHAIRMAN: Certainly it will, and the medical officer of health can also assist him in that respect. MR. RICE seconded the motion, which was agreed to unanimously. **Workington Local Board of Health will continue..............** |
