WORKINGTON LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The CHAIRMAN in drawing the attention of the Board to the apparent inequalities in the ratable value of houses in Workington, said there were some houses valued at £4 4s., and the water rate on that amount was only one penny per week. No house should pay less than 3d. per week for water. There were houses in Workington rated at £20 and let for £40. In the meantime he was not in a position to make any suggestion on the subject. THE EXTENSION OF THE GASWORKS. The CHAIRMAN said since the meeting of the Gas Committee was held MR. HEPWORTH had forwarded the plan and specifications required for the extension of the gasworks. Two tenders had also been received for putting down a bed of retorts, one of which amounted to £47 10s., and the other to £14 16s. MR. SMITH said he thought they could do without a bed of retorts this year. The number of retorts they had going would be quite ample, and he moved that the consideration of the subject be deferred till after the extension of the gasworks was carried out. This was seconded and agreed to. A COMPLAINT. A letter was read from MR. WILLIAM COULTHARD, stating that he had frequently applied to the gas manager to make a connection at his house and workshop at Clifton-terrace, but he had not done so, and the consequence was that the writer's men were unable to work the requisite number of hours. The letter was referred to the clerk, who was instructed to see the matter attended to. RIGHT OF WAY. The CHAIRMAN said some time since he stated that MR. CURWEN claimed £39 for allowing the Board to carry water pipes through his land to the New Yard, Moss Bay, and the Derwent Ironworks. He (MR. CURWEN) prepared an agreement between himself and the Board, and MR. WARWICK thought certain clauses ought to be altered, and he altered them accordingly. MR. WAUGH, on behalf of MR. CURWEN, had now returned the draft agreement, stating that he could not consent to the alterations made by MR. WARWICK. On the motion of the CHAIRMAN, it was decided that the draft agreement be approved of without the alterations proposed by MR. WARWICK. **Workington Local Board of Health will continue**.......................... |
