WIGTON AND DISTRICT. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE SON OF "JOHN PEEL". - MR. JOHN PEEL, son of JOHN PEEL, of hunting memory, is recovering from a recent illness, and able to get about. SEWERAGE. - The contractors have come upon a rather valuable bed of clay near the Market Hill, Wigton, which has proved very useful to them for puddling the pipes. WIGTON CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL. - MR. J. TODD FERRIER, senior student of Nottingham Congregational College has received and accepted a call to the Wigton Congregational Chapel, and will enter on his duties on Sunday, August 6th. HEAVY RAINFALL. - There was a remarkable heavy rainfall in Wigton on Saturday forenoon, and the streets were so much flooded that the contractors for the sewerage had much difficulty in keeping the channels clear. As it was, some of the cellars in King-street suffered. HOPE'S AUCTION MART, WIGTON, TUESDAY. - There was a good show of all kinds of stock here to-day, and with a numerous attendance of local and distant buyers, it was the best market all through for many weeks. Fat sheep were a splendid show and made fully 4s. a head more money. Best half-breds, 52s to 63s. 6d; lesser, 44s to 51s. 6d; crosses 39s to 53s; Cheviot wethers, 40s to 48s 6d; Cheviot ewes, 44s to 49s 6d; herdwicks, 31s to 42s 6d. Fat lambs ranged from 24s to 50s each. The fat cattle also were a better lot than for some weeks, and made fully £1 a-head more money. Best cattle £20 to £25; lesser £17 to £19 15s; small £12 to £16 12s 5d. A good lot of veal calves ranged from 40s to 93s each. A large show of pork swine of splendid quality, and sold extremely dear for time of year. Best £5 10s to £7 2s each; lesser, £3 to £5 5s; shots and pigs, 25s to 56s each. Numbers sold: 50 cattle, 2 bulls, and 11 calves, - total 63 head; 643 sheep and lambs, and 61 pigs. DR. MITCHELL. - We understand that MR. H. MITCHELL, M. D., Wigton has succeeded to the business of the late DR. DODGSON, of Cockermouth, and that he will shortly leave for the scene of his future labours. ======================================================================= |
