Maryport, Friday, July 21st.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As the time approaches for the annual election of three Trustees for the town and harbour, there are various rumours about the probably candidates. MAJOR WOOD and MR. MANDLE - both of whom have rendered excellent service - intend, it is presumed, to offer themselves for re-election. MR. DIXON, notwithstanding the persuasion of his friends, adheres to his determinationn to retire from the Board. It is confidently announced that MR. WILLIAM THOMPSON, one of the guardians for the township of Maryport, has decided to offer himself for election as a Trustee. A requisition to MR. FRANCIS WALKER to come forward as a candidate was extensively signed yesterday, but whether MR. WALKER will allow himself to be nominated, we have not ascertained. CAPTAIN SUITER and MR. HAMILTON are also mentioned as probably candidates. ___________________________________________________________________________ A London correspondent says - I understand that the Conservative leaders have decided to propose a vote of censure on the Egyptian policy of the Government, and that notice of it will be given in the course of the present week. It is probable that the motion will be placed in the hands of MR. BOURKE. The responsible leaders of the Opposition had no share in a resolution of which MR. GORST gave notice on Monday afternoon, and the objecty of that notice was, of course, to apply a little stimulus to the official heads of the party. The vote of censure which is to be brought forward by the Tory leaders will probably be more comprehensive in its character and more skilfully framed than the piece of Parliamentary claptrap which MR. GORST placed on the paper on Monday afternoon. Their object is, of course, to construct a net which will catch as many fish as possible. =================================================================== |
