WIGTON
~~~~~~~ A NEGLIGENT MOTHER - JANE ROBINSON, of High Laws, Abbey Town,. was charged with having neglected to maintain her child, RICHARD ROBINSON, who had consequently become chargeable to the common fund of the Wigton Union. - MR. BENSON prosecuted - MR. MOORE (relieving officer) said that the defendant owed £5 19s to the Wigton Union, the debt having been incurred through her son becoming chargeable to the Wigton Union, on account of the defendant neglecting to maintain him - The Bench committed the defendant to gaol for two months with hard labour. NEGLECTING TO MAINTAIN A MOTHER - WILLIAM FELL, Corby Hill, labourer, was charged with having neglected to maintain his mother, ELIZABETH FELL, who had consequently become chargeable to the common fund of the Wigton Union. - MR. BENSON prosecuted also in this case. - MR. MOORE said that the defendant was earning about 22s or 23s per week, and kept two cows. He had neglected to maintain his mother, who had become chargeable to the common fund of the Wigton Union. - MR. CARRICK appeared for the defendant, and elicited the fact during the cross-examination of MR. MOORE that the defendant had offered several times to take his mother to live with him. - The Bench decided to dismiss the case. DRUNK IN CHARGE OF A PONY AND CART. - WILLIAM BROUGH, farmer, Gill-bank, Abbey Town, was charged with having been drunk whilst in charge of a horse and cart, on the 11th inst., on a highway in the parish of Holme Coltram. - Police-constable 64 stated that he found the defendant, on the day in question, at Swinsty, in charge of a pony and cart, galloping about. Defendant was drunk, and witness had to take charge of the pony and conveyance. - Defendant was fined 15s and costs. |
