INVADING THE FOOTPATHS. - JONATHAN RITSON, cab driver, of the Green Dragon
Hotel, Workington, was summoned for having, on the 6th inst. unlawfully and
wilfully driven three horses and a wagonette upon the footpaths in
Main-street, Cockermouth.  The defendant, who pleaded guilty, was fined 11s
6d., including costs.

A DANGEROUS CHARACTER. - JAMES ANDERSON, ticket-of-leave man, was brought up
in custody and charged under the Crimes Prevention Act with neglecting to
report his whereabouts.  SUPERINTENDENT TAYLOR stated that the prisoner was
found early on the morning of the 11th inst., near the railway goods
station.  When apprehended prisoner said he belonged to Parsonby;  but
witness found on going there that this statement was not correct.
   The prisoner for many years had been very little out of prison.
On the 30th of June, 1868, he was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment
with hard labour for stealing £1  15s., at Aspatria;
   at Whitehaven, on the 15th of July, 1869, he was sentenced to fourteen
days' hard labour for vagrancy;
at Cockermouth, on the 13th of September, 1869, he was sentenced to one
month's hard labour for vagrancy;
   at the Quarter Sessions, Carlisle, on the 19th October, 1869, he was
sentenced to seven years' penal servitude for breaking into a counting house
and committing a larceny therein;
at the Carlisle Assizes on the 20th of July, 1875, he was sentenced to
twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 1s  5d;
    and at the Quarter Sessions, on the 2nd of January, 1877, he was
sentenced to seven years' penal servitude and two years' police supervision,
for stealing 3s.

The Bench decided to revoke the prisoner's license.

POACHING. -  EDWARD DONNELLY, collier, of Dearham, was charged by MURRAY
BIRNIE, gamekeeper, Tallentire, with having been on land in the possession
of MR. W. BROWNE, in search of game.  Defendant did not appear, bu the case
was heard in his absence, and he was fined £1 including costs.
