THE FRENCH MINISTRY

A Central News telegram, dated Paris, yesterday, says: The President has informed M. de FREYCINET that he could not desert his post during the arrangement of the Egyptian question. In diplomatic circles it is believed that means will be found to enable M. de FREYCINET to withdraw his resignation with dignity.

The 'Freeman's Journal' in announcing that COLONEL BRACKENBURY has resigned, owing to differences of opinion with EARL SPENCER, says this is highly creditable to LORD SPENCER as a ruler and gentleman.

A moonlighter, named MICHAEL HOURIHAN, has been arrested at Drumoleague, County Cork, after an exciting chase of four hours. He was brought before a magistrate and remanded.

ALLEGED MURDER

MARY VIDLER was remanded at Chatham yesterday, charged with the wilful murder of GEORGE YOUNG, with whom she lived, by stabbing him in the neck.

The 'Assistance' troop ship, having touched the ground off Selsey Bell,yesterday, on a spot where the chart indicates deep water, arrangements have been made to take the bearings of the lightship.

JUSTICE KAY yesterday dismissed a motion to restrain GENERAL BOOTH from using the Grecian Theatre so as to endanger renewal of licence.

THE HARVEST

Harvest began yesterday morning in the Reading district. The oat crop is good, but wheat and beans are looking worse.

CABINET COUNCIL

A Cabinet Council was held yesterday afternoon. EARL SPENCER and MR. CHAMBERLAIN were absent, the latter being detained by domestic affairs in Birmingham.

A VOTE OF CREDIT

In the House of Commons yesterday afternoon MR. GLADSTONE gave notice that on Monday next he proposed to ask for a vote of credit, to enable the Government to strengthen their forces in the Mediterranean.
