~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ALLONBY BAND OF HOPE. - ________________________ The annual pic-nic in connection with the above-named Band of Hope, was held on Wednesday last. The place fixed upon for the day's outing this year, was Brayton Hall, and the children and their friends to the number of 194, were as usual conveyed thither in carts. The carts, to the number of 16, mustered in the playground of the British school, and the children having been all comfortably seated, the cavalcade started and reached Brayton a little after two o'clock. A procession was at once formed, and proceeded to the Hall, where two or three hymns were sung by the children, after which they dispersed over the grounds, enjoying themselves in various games till tea was ready. Tea over, the games were again continued till about half-past six o'clock, when preparations were made for the return journey home. Before starting, two more hymns were sung, and short addresses delivered by the REV. MR. REID, of Perth, and MR. COOK, of Cockermouth. The weather was all that could be wished for, and everything passed off pleasantly. Allonby was reached shortly after nine o'clock. The carts drove to the reading-room, and after singing two hymns, and giving three cheers for those who had lent their carts, the children went quietly to their homes. ========================= SUDDEN DEATH OF A CHILD AT COLLIN'S-TERRACE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Saturday morning last, a child, nine days old, belonging to MR. PATRICK MCKENDERY, iron-worker, Collins-terrace, was found dead in bed. It appears that the father and mother of the child retired to bed about nine o'clock on Friday evening. About half-past two on Saturday morning, MRS. M'KENDERY awoke, and the child was then alive. The woman shortly afterwards fell asleep and did not wake until about five o'clock, when the child was found to be dead. The facts of the case were communicated to the coroner, who deemed it unnecessary to hold an inquest. |
