LOCAL & DISTRICT INTELLIGENCE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICEBERGS IN THE ATLANTIC ----------------------------------- On Friday last, the Norwegian schooner "Leon", with deals for MESSRS. J. and W. MCGOWAN, of Maryport and Whitehaven, arrived at this port. The 'Leon" had been in collision with an iceberg three weeks before she arrived at Maryport, and sustained damage to the amount of about £500. The bows of the vessel are stove in below the deck line. The forecastle is smashed right through, the windlass carried away, the jibboom driven inwards, and the masts more or less carried away. Owing to the serious damage about the bow of the vessel, a sail had been nailed on to prevent the ship making water. Had she been laden with any other cargo but timber, the "Leon" must inevitably have gone down. How she has succeeded in making the voyage after sustaining the damage she suffered, it is difficult to conjecture. During Friday a large number of persons visited the dock to have a look at the vessel. __________________________ THE LAND LEAGUE __________________ We understand that a branch of the Land League is about to be formed at Maryport. __________________ THE ANTI- VACCINATORS ________________________ JOHN WALKER, joiner, Marsh-terrace; JAMES NELSON, iron-worker, Gilmour-street WILLIAM BLACKBURN, clerk, Maryport, are summoned to appear before the Maryport magistrates to-day, for neglecting to have their children vaccinated. |
