ASPATRIA AND DISTRICT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE ASPATRIA COLLIERIES. - The water has been cleared from these pits, and work has been resumed after their being idle for seven weeks. The ponies were put down on Sunday evening, and the men went in on Monday morning. Another slight accident happened to the pumps on Tuesday night. The clack door of the top set of pumps broke, but it was soon replaced, and the pumps were set to work again after a delay of a few hours.
THE ASPATRIA VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. - At a meeting of the committee and officers of the Aspatria Volunteer Fire Brigades, held on Friday evening last, it was decided to hold a prize competition in connection with the usual annual meeting during the month of August. Several prizes have already been given, and the committee intend opening a subscription list for procuring prizes.
It is intended to ask permission of SIR WILFRID LAWSON to hold the competition in Brayton Park, adjoining the fish pond, as the drill practice of the annual meeting has always been held there.
The brigade has always been invited by MISS LAWSON to go through their practice at Arkleby Hall, and afterwards partake of luncheon. The brigade have accepted the invitation, and will visit Arkleby Hall early in August.
