With regret, which will be very generally shared, we record the death of the Rev. Thomas WILKINSON, Vicar of Stanwix, at the ripe age of 83. He had seen in last Friday’s paper the announcement of the precarious condition of Mr. LOUSON, and as soon as possible the same day he came down to inquire after his old friend. On his return home, he had a paralytic seizure, the severity of which, coupled with his great age, inspired his friends with the gravest apprehension, and he died on Monday morning. Mr. WILKINSON belonged to the Whitehaven District. He was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford, taking his B. A. in 1823, and M. A. in 1825. He was ordained Deacon by Bishop GOODENOUGH, in Carlisle Cathedral in 1822; priest, 1823. During many years he filled the offices of Chaplain of the County Gaol, Precentor of the Cathedral, and Lecturer of St. Cuthbert’s. He also kept a high class school, in which some of our foremost professional and public men received their early education. His reputation as an educationist secured him at a later period the appointment as on of her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools in Scotland, and his own school at Knowefield has long been a model of successful management. In 1840 Mr. WILKINSON was appointed to the living of Stanwix. In spite of his many years, his energy was wonderful almost to the last. He was greatly respected by his parishioners, and was very popular everywhere. He leaves a widow, who has been an invalid for a long time. The living of Stanwix is in the gift of the Bishop, and is worth over £400 a year, with a pleasant vicarage house and a glebe of three acres. The remains of Mr. WILKINSON will be interred in Stanwix Churchyard this (Friday) morning, at ten o’clock. |
