A paragraph in last week’s paper would prepare our readers for the announcement of the death of the venerable and venerated minister of the Scottish National Church in this city, which took place on Saturday morning last. He was a native of Arbroath, where he was born in 1806, and was educated for the ministry at King’s College, Aberdeen, and the University of Edinburgh. He began his career in the church as an assistant to the Rev. Robert LEE, then in charge of the parish of Campsie; subsequently he was appointed to the Presbyterian Church at Wigan; and in 1844 became the minister of the Scottish National Church in this city, which office he filled until his death with an affectionate devotedness to his people which is best realized by the old word “pastor.” Retiring in disposition, he never appeared in public agitations or controversies; yet in all intercourse with others he manifested the flowing courtesy which is commonly associated with gentlemen of a byegone age. The time which was not required for his pastoral duties was given to his books; for in certain departments of scholarship - he had been Hebrew prizeman at Aberdeen - his attainments were solid and exact, and his general information was extensive. This was turned to good account in a series of lectures which he delivered to the members of the Mechanics’ Institution many years ago. Mr. LOUSON was never married. His remains were on Tuesday removed to Arbroath, for interment in the burial ground of the family; and were followed from the house to the railway station by many, not only members of the church but ministerial brethren and gentlemen of the city, including his Worship, the Mayor. |
