The Dalston Manslaughter Case Print E-mail

George LITTLE, innkeeper, Halfway House, and Benjamin JOHNSTONE, gardener, Dalston, were brought up on remand charged with causing the death of Daniel MATTHEWS, 60 years of age, residing at Hawksdale, on the 20th ult. Mr. WESTMORLAND appeared for the prisoners.

Mr. Supt. SEMPILL stated that the prisoners were remanded from last Saturday pending the result of a post mortem examination and the Coroner’s inquest. The coroner’s jury found a verdict  of manslaughter against JOHNSTONE only. The evidence was much the same laid before the Coroner, but it was very conclusive, and if, after hearing the witnesses, the Bench did not think there was sufficient evidence to commit LITTLE for manslaughter, he could be dealt with as an accessory after.

The witnesses were then examined, and the Bench committed both prisoners for trial at the ensuing Quarter Sessions for felony. The Bench agreed to accept bail, prisoners in 100l each, and two sureties of 50l each.
