CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY.
 
At the Cambridge Theological Tripos, on Thursday last, the name of Mr. J. H. BATTERSBY, son of the Rev. Canon BATTERSBY, appeared as one of the two who passed in first class. He was also third in Hebrew.

THE WATERLOO CUP.
 
 
Mr. S. J. BINNING, of Carlisle, has returned his Waterloo Cup nomination to the committee, and it has been awarded to Mr. Martin CORBET, of Kidderminster.

WHITEHAVEN REFUGE
SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY.
 
 
The thirty-seventh anniversary of this school was held on Tuesday evening. A large company of ladies and gentlemen partook of tea, and a concert followed, presided over by Mr. BENTINCK, M. P.

MAN DROWNED AT WORKINGTON.
 

On Wednesday morning the body of Robert CARRUTHERS, farm servant, 60 years of age, was found in the Millrace, at the soapery, near to Derwent Bridge, Workington. He was seen the previous evening under the influence of drink, and it is supposed that he had fallen into the stream on his way home. An inquest was held in the evening, and a verdict of “found Drowned” was returned.

THE DISTRESS IN IRELAND:
MEETING IN WHITEHAVEN.
 
 
A meeting was held in the Town Hall, Whitehaven, on Monday evening, for the purpose of raising subscriptions in aid of the Duchess of Marlborough’s fund, and that of the Lord Mayor of Dublin and his relief committee.
 
Mr. BENTINCK, M. P., presided. A committee was appointed to raise subscriptions, and a list was opened in the room.

DASTARDLY CONDUCT.
 
 
The practice of laying poisoned meat on the roads and in the fields in the west of the county is becoming a frequent occurrence.
 
On Tuesday a valuable pointer dog, the property of Mr. LUMB, of Greenbank, was suddenly taken ill on the road between Greenbank and Preston Hows, and died in a few minutes. Miss. LUMB was in charge of the dog.
 
It is supposed it had partaken of poisoned meat laid on the road. A reward of £5 is offered for the detection of the guilty person.
