FATAL GIG ACCIDENT. On Thursday night, as Mr. James SHIEL, farm manager at Hownam Mains, near Kelso, was driving home in a gig, it was upset against a bridge over a stream, and he and the horse were thrown over the parapet into the water, a distance of about thirty feet. He died very shortly after he was rescued. __________ MAYORAL BANQUET. On Friday the Mayor of Manchester entertained the Judges, Lord Chief Justice COLERIDGE and Lord Justice BRETT, to dinner. Lord DERBY and Mr. BRIGHT were also present, but in their speeches they studiously avoided political allusions. __________ BURGH. A complaint was made at last meeting respecting some liquid filth running on to the road and causing a nuisance, but the Inspector of Nuisances said he had visited the village, and no nuisance existed as complained of. __________ |
