CART HORSES. The prize of £20 offered by the English Cart Horse Society for the best essay “On the Breeding, Rearing and Management of Cart Horses” has been awarded to Mr. W. R. TROTTER, son of Mr. W. TROTTER, of South Acomb, Stocksfield-on-Tyne. _______ FATAL ICE ACCIDENT. On Sunday two boys named WATKINS, wre drowned whilst skating on the canal at Goytre, near Pontypool. Three boys went to skate on the canal, within about fifty yards of their own homes, when the ice broke and they were immersed. One of the lads held onto the ice until he was rescued by two men, who stood on the bridge. The other two were drowned. __________ DEATH FROM HYDROPHOBIA. A man named WIGNAL, residing at Astley, Lancashire, died on Sunday, from hydrophobia, the result of the bite of a dog eleven weeks ago. The same dog bit several people. __________ BURSTING OF A BIG GUN. By the bursting of the experimental 38 ton gun at Woolwich on Tuesday, under the extraordinary strain of a double charge of powder and shell, the opinion of the committee attributing the bursting of the Thunderer Gun to the same cause is held to be confirmed. __________ THE DEAN OF CARLISLE. The venerable Dean, who is staying at Ventor, has had a distressing attack of bronchitis, but we are glad to say that he is improving daily, the news yesterday being quite encouraging. __________ THE WEATHER. The weather has continued open during the week. There have been periods of each day almost spring like in warmth and freshness. The land is now in a nice condition for ploughing. _________ POLITICAL DINNERS. Amongst those who attended a banquet given by Lord BEACONSFIELD at the Foreign office on Wednesday evening were the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the Earl of Lonsdale. Mr. Cavendish BENTINCK was among the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s party. __________ MARYPORT AND CARLISLE RAILWAY DIVIDEND. The directors of this Company intend recommending to the shareholders, at their next half yearly meeting on the 18th inst., a dividend at the rate of 9 ½ per cent per annum for the half year ending 31st December, 1879. |
