STEALING POTATOES FROM A HEAP. Patrick McCONVERY and Bridget McCONVERY, his wife, two dealers of old rags, bones &c., were charged with stealing about three stones of potatoes, the property of John SKELTON, of Lowfield House on Saturday, the 31st ult. The case was proved on oath. Under the New Summary Jurisdiction Act the Bench had the power to deal with the case, it being under 40’s, so the prisoners having been cautioned in the usual way, were asked if they pleaded guilty. The male prisoner did plead guilty, but the female said she was not guilty. The Bench sent McCONVERY to gaol for one month with hard labour, and discharged his wife. ______ CHARGE OF STEALING DUCK AT ALLHALLOWS VICARAGE. Thomas DAVIS, a coal miner, was brought up in custody charged with having stolen two ducks and a Cochin China fowl, the property of the Rev. H. H. HARRIS, incumbent of Allhallows, on Saturday last. Mr. BENSON appeared for the prisoner. After a lengthened hearing of the evidence, the Bench decided that they would not hear anymore, and discharged the prisoner. __________ BEGGING. James BRADY, and his daughter, a little girl about ten years of age, were charged with begging on Monday last in the village of Westnewton. P. C. BELL stationed at Allonby, said he observed the prisoner sending his little girl from house to house asking for relief. Prisoners, who were before the Bench on the 21st November last, on a similar charge, were ordered to be imprisoned for 14 days each, with hard labour. |
