A pauper named Robert GRAHAM was charged with being drunk in the Workhouse at Fusehill on the 26th ult. The defendant got leave from Mr. TIFFEN, the master, to go out for a short time, and he came back drunk. - Defendant complained of having been violently treated by the master, who, he said, knocked him down and kicked him on the floor. Mr. TIFFEN denied this charge, and said he would not have brought up the defendant, who had behaved well up to this time, but these cases were occurring so frequently that a stop must be put to them. Defendant: You had no occasion to half murder me. You might have been standing there on a charge of manslaughter, and you will be before the hand is played out. (laughter.) In answer to the Mayor, GRAHAM said he got a line from Dr. REEVES about twelve months ago to go to the hospital; he was astonished to find it was the Workhouse Hospital - (laughter) - and after he was in he could not get out again. There was the rub. (Laughter.) -The Bench sent the prisoner to gaol for fourteen days. ___________ |
