Carlisle Patriot - December 27th, 1844
THE NORTHERN BLIND AND DEAF AND DUMB ASYLUM.
_______

The annual meeting was held Thursday last, at the establishment in Wellington Place, Newcastle, The Venerable Archdeacon THORP in the chair.

Before the report was read, the pupils sang a hymn with pleasing effect; after which the several inmates went through their exercises in the elementary branches of education. At the conclusion of the examination, the venerable chairman expressed his approbation of the manner in which the pupils had acquitted themselves, and also stated that while he felt deeply the value of the present institution, he exceedingly regretted to find its usefulness retarded from the want of funds. He, however, trusted, by proper exertions, this temporary embarrassment would be speedily overcome.

With regard to the appointment of a Chaplain, whose sole duty would be directed to the pupils, he was glad to announce that he had succeeded in raisi ng the sum £1,000 towards an endowment for that object; and although that of itself was not a sufficiency to remunerate the chaplain for his duties, yet he hoped what was wanting would soon be made up by the subscribers and other friends.

Robert PLUMMER, Esq., then read the report, which went into brief details of the progress of the institution since 1841, stating the number of blind and deaf and dumb received and instructed from that time up to the present, and showing taht several of the inmates have been so well educated and trained to habits of industry, that they had become useful members of society.

The report, after alluding to the propriety of having an endowed chaplaincy, referred to the depressed state of the funds, to increase which the committee recommended increased exertion on the part of the friends to excite the attention of the benevolent.

The report having been received and adopted, a committee was formed for the ensuing year; after which, thanks were voted to the Venerable Archdeacon, when the meeting broke up. In the evening the pupils were examined again at the Music J+Hall, before a numerous audience, Mr. PLUMMER in the chair.
