NEWS ARTICLES ___ WORKINGTON. NEW RAILWAY. Messrs.R. H. and H. HODGSON have made a good start with the extension of the Cleator and Workington main line from Workington to Dearham. Large gangs of men have been set to work, at each end of the line, and the foundations for bridges are being put in. ********************* RAILWAY VIADUCT. Mr. COUSINS, of Whitehaven, the contractor for the building of the new railway viaduct near the London and North-Western Station, has now commenced with the work. The cottages that abutted on Stanley Street, facing the line, are being demolished. The land is railed off, and preparations made for putting in the foundations for the stonework. ************************* ENTERTAINMENT. A miscellaneous entertainment was held in the Good Templar's Hall, on Tuesday night, under the chairmanship of Mr. O. J. VALENTINE. The entertainment consisted of songs, duets, recitations, &c., after which a few select games were indulged in. The programme was very creditably gone through, and the entertainment on the whole was thoroughly enjoyed. *********************** PROFESSOR ANDRE'S ALPINE CHOIR. This celebrated choir, which has just returned from a very successful visit to Belfast, is announced to give a series of concerts and entertainments in the Assembly Rooms. We have no doubt our readers will remember their former visit with pleasure, and will give them a hearty welcome on their re-appearance here. ******************* BIRD SHOW. The Committee of the Workington Cage Bird Society have decided upon holding another show. The dates fixed upon are the 3rd and 5th of January next. Owing to the want of competition in the Chrysanthenum and floral exhibits this part of the show will be abandoned. ************************** |
