IRELAND ____ MR. O'CONNELL'S MASTERY OF ABUSE. _____ Mr. O'CONNELL is commonly said to be a great master of abuse. Let us see in what this mastery consists. In his speech of the 2nd, "liar," "scoundrel," "brute," and miscreant," were the words applied to the Examiner. In his speech of the 9th he puts forth his whole strength; the "miscreant" is not simply a "miscreant," but "groveling in his garret." What a world of opprobrium lies in the charge of the garret! Presently "the miscreant groveling in a garret" is "a base brutal, and bribed wertch." Bribed to grovel in a garret! On the 2nd, "liar" was the word; on the 9th the great master of abuse had by amighty exercise of his powers, added "foul" to it, and "foul liar" was the curiously forcible climax. Doubtless in Mr. O'CONNELL's view there are liars who are foul and liars who are fair, and thus is prudently reserved a handsome classification for himself. If all this be the mastery of abuse, in the same sense a scavenger may be said to be a great master of mud. ~The Examiner. ******************** A rescript has been lately received by the Most Rev. Doctor CROLLY, Archbishop of Armagh, from his Holiness the Pope, which directs "the prelates and the clergy of this country to abstain from all political agitation, to attend exclusively to their religious duties, to inculcate universal peace and charity as the bond of Christian perfection; but, above all, to recommend, by word and example, honour and submission to the ruling powers. The Holy Father proclaims the as the genuine doctrine of the Catholic Church at all times and under all circumstances." ~Dublin Monitor. ********************** |
