LOSS OF VESSEL AND
ALL HANDS. _____ We are deeply concerned to announce the loss of the Ellen and Ann, schooner, the property of Messrs. HARLEY, of this city which was wrecked near Ardmore Head, on Friday last, and all hands perished. The vessel was commanded by Mr. T. MORGAN, who was a Welshman; she was about 150 tons burthen. It is supposed that the Master was endeavouring to run her into Youghal harbour for shelter from the storm, but the vessel was driven so violently ashore, near to Ardmore Head, that she became an immediate wreck. It was impossible to render any assistance, such was the state of the elements at the moment, and, as stated, every person on board, (about six or seven) met a watery grave. - Cork Reporter of Tuesday.***************************** DREADFUL SHIPWRECK ________ On Tuesday, Mr. William WATTS, master of the brig Jane, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was, together with seven of his crew, put ashore at Sheerness, having been on Wednesday, the 4th inst., shipwrecked upon a sand called the lower middle. From the report of the master, it appears that on Tuesday, the 3rd inst., whilst running up the East Swin, with the wind blowing from the E.S.E., the weather very thick, the ship stuck upon the Lower Middle, and broke up on the following night. Two of the crew, John DUNN and John MOSES, left the ship in the skiff at eleven p.m., and it is hoped that they got on board some vessels riding in the reach. Captain WATTS and the remainder of the crew, seven in number, the mate being very bad with the small pox, left the ship at the same time in the long boat, and succeeded in getting off the sand through the heavy breakers, although the boat was repeatedly nearly filled with water. They at length met the brig Unity, Mark BULWER, master, by whom they were treated with great kindness and landed at Sheerness. ************************* |
