Carlisle Patriot - December 27th, 1844
CORRESPONDENCE
_____
To The Editor of the Carlisle Patriot.
____

Sir, - It is not often necessary to desire publicity to be given to any thing that transpires in this part of the country, but under the following circumstancesI think it is requisite, and may prove a preventive of further acts of fanatisim.

Late on Tuesday night, and early on Wednesday morning, a band of thougtless youths of both sexes, assembled together, and proceeded to disturb the retired and peaceful inhabitants of the village of Ullermire, Hethersgill and the immediate neighbourhood, by sometimes singing hymns, sometimes profane songs, and by playing viols, clarionets, &c., &c. Nor were they satisfied with this, for in some instances they kicked at the doors with their feet, and made such a disturbance, that the inmates were inclined to believe a savage banditti had come to visit them, instead of a band of zealots.

As my only intention in writing the above is to prevent a repitition of such practices, I shall forbear to give you a full detail, which would be a disgrace to your column; and conclude by hoping that I and my peaceable neighbours may not in the future be disturbed.

I am, Mr. Editor, yours faithfully,
A Constant Reader.
