The Carlisle Patriot - December 27th 1844

It will be in the recollection  of our readers that a short time ago Mr.
James APPLEYARD, of Penrith, was  waylaid and robbed by three excavators
employed upon the Lancaster and Carlisle  Railway, and that two of the offenders
were soon after taken into  custody.

We now have the satisfaction of  announcing that the third robber, who is
well known by the cognomen of "The  Horse," has been captured also. It
appears that the fellow applied at the  Vagrant Office in Penrith, for a ticket for
a night's lodging, which was granted  to him without observation, but when he
reached the quarters at the Penrith Town  Head, he was recognised by some of
his former fellow workmen, who immediately  gave information to Mr. SLEE, the
Keeper of the House of Correction, who  forthwith took that necessary steps for
his apprehension.

He was brought before the  magistrates on Tuesday, and was fully
committed to take his trial at the ensuing  sessions. It is satisfactory to know that
although the depredations and offences  of the railway labourers have been
very numerous since the commencement of the  line, they have very rarely
succeeded in evading the vigilance of the  constables, and this fact has had such an
effect upon them that Penrith is now  nearly as quiet as before the beginning
of the works.

It is only fair to add that the  superintendent, sub-contractors, and
other parties connected with the works have  cordially co-operated with the
constables in controlling their unruly  workmen.
