THE ATTEMPT ON THE QUEEN’S LIFE. Since his incarceration in Reading gaol, MacLEAN seems to have evinced considerable concern at his grave position, and avers that he “never attempted or wished to injure the Queen, or even one hair of the head of her most gracious Majesty Queen Victoria.” He prays that her Majesty may live for many years, and that when the Almighty calls her from this “vale of tears” she may find “a home in the realms of the blessed.” Notices have been sent to all the witnesses who, at the committal of MacLEAN at Windsor, were bound over in their own recognisances to attend the assizes, informing them that the trial will commence at Reading on the 19th inst. At the Windsor Quarter Sessions on Monday, the Recorder, Mr. A. M. SKINNER, during his address to the jury, alluded to the dastardly attempt upon the Queen’s life by MacLEAN, and highly complimented Mr. Chief Superintendent HAYES for the courage and zeal he displayed in the apprehension of the would be regicide. In opening the proceedings of the Bucks Quarter Sessions the Duke of Buckingham also alluded to MacLEAN’s crime, and remarked that the Court would be wanting in feelings of loyalty and duty if they neglected to present a congratulatory address upon her Majesty’s escape. Lord CARRINGTON seconded the proposal, and a committee was at once appointed to draw up the address. ********** |
