Easter Wrestling at Carlisle

"The Annual wrestling at the Railway Hotel took place on Monday and Tuesday last. The day threatened to be unfavourable, frequent and heavy showers of rain falling during the morning; but, with the exception of a very heavy hail shower whilst the first round was going on(which caused the spectators to fly for shelter, leaving the ring completely deserted) the day turned out fine, the sun shone beautifully and the ground was in a capital state. The attendance was numerous and the wrestling throughout was marked by the same splendid displays of science and agility which has characterised the Railway Hotel Easter Wrestling ever since its commencement." Below is a list of the men competing at this event. The weights are listed as simply "9 ½ stone and eleven stone ". The winner in both weights received £5. The article goes on to list other similar events at Appleby, Manchester and Newcastle all of which were attended by wrestlers from the Cumberland area. Does anyone have any knowledge if this was the same style wrestling that we still enjoy today as "Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling".
