A very melancholy occurrence took place on Wednesday last. In consequence of the intense frost during the past few days the lake of Derwentwater was partially frozen over, and about noon several boys went upon the lower part of the lake to a place called " Denny " to slide, when two more daring than the rest ventured on some thin ice which at once gave way, and they immersed in the water. Their cries were heard by some people near at hand, but before they could be rescued life was extinct. Their names are John and Henry, sons of Mr. Thomas Hindmoor, miner, the former eleven and the other nine years of age. |
