SERIOUS GIG ACCIDENT AT RHEDA YESTERDAY
Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon a serious accident happened near Rheda
to HENRY ALLISON, an elderly man, coachman to MR DIXON of the above
place. ALLISON was returning from the flower show at St Paul's
School Howgate with a young and a gig. He had got as far as
his own house, at Rheda Lodge and was talking to his wife when the
horse became restive and then dashed off down the road in the direction
of Cleator Moor. ALLISON was thrown out, and the wheels of the
gig passed over his legs. The horse threw the gig over, and
dragged it for some distance, and was finally secured at Rheda Quarry
by a lad and some workmen from the quarry. The gig was
completely wrecked and both shafts were broken. ALLISON was able
to follow the horse down the road and take charge of it. He was
much shaken, but probably this would be the extent of his injuries.
