                     THREE GENTEEL ROWDIES

At the County Court held at Whitehaven on Tuesday last,
Mr W. H. NEWSOME, the lessee of the Whitehaven Theatre,
sued Joseph TYSON, Roper Street; Joseph MUSGRAVE,
Victoria Road ;
and Alexander STEWART, Duke Street, (custom-house office,)
Whitehaven, for the sum of £50 for an assault committed on him
at the Whitehaven Theatre on the 26th December last. From the
evidence it appeared that the defendants were at the theatre witnessing
a rehearsal at an early hour on the 26th of December, when they made
use of bad language, joined in the chorus when the ladies were singing,
and ultimately got to fighting.
The plaintiff went to put an end to the disturbance when the
defendant TYSON got hold of him by the coat, and the defendant
MUSGRAVE seized him by the lets and handled him so roughly
that some of his ribs were broken.
The defendants were drunk at the time. His Honour said the defendants
were three badly-conducted young men and he hoped this would be a
lesson to them. STEWART held a public situation. He had better take
care what he was doing. The conduct of STEWART was very reprehensible.
He gave judgment against the other two defendants for £30 and costs, and
hoped they would learn to behave better in future.
