The Maryport Advertiser - 25 March, 1882

THEFT OF A CLOAK AT LOWCA.

Elizabeth FRY was charged with stealing a waterproof cloak, the property of Dinah, wife of John OWEN, of Lowca. Mr. CHAPMAN prosecuted, and Mr. FIDLER defended.

Defendant cleaned out the school house at Lowca, and in December last two children of the plaintiff's took the cloak to school. It was afterwards missed, and subsequently defendant was now wearing a jacket made of the material.

Witnesses were called to prove that the jacket was made of the material of the cloak, and some pieces of the cloth found in the defendant's house were produced and identified. For the defence it was urged that the cloak, which was made up into the jacket had been in the defendant's possession some years, and that the case was brought out of ill will. Testimony as to the character was also brought in.

The magistrates considered the case proved, but only fined defendant 40s in consideration of her previous good character.
