THE ELLEN ROLLING MILLS.

An event having an important bearing upon the  commercial prosperity and
progress of this town has just taken place; we refer  to the Ellen Rolling
Mills, which, after a prolonged period of idleness, were  re-opened yesterday.
Already a number of hands are employed, which is likely to  be very largely
augmented  at no distant date.

We are glad to find that the prospects of the  finished bar iron trade
appear to warrant the step which the enterprising firm  of Messrs. Kirk Brothers
and Company have taken. We have no doubt that in a  little time we shall also
see the manufacture of steel in our immediate  district, and so keep pace
with our neighbours at Workington. In view of the  rapid development of this new
industry in West Cumberland, the sooner our wet  dock is opened for business,
the better.

A large export trade has to be done in this  article, and deep water dock
accommodation at Maryport is absolutely essential.  irrespective  of any
additions to the existing trade, if the trade which we  already have is to be
satisfactorily provided for. It is far from our wishes to  be alarmists or
irresponsible critics; but we cannot shut our eyes to what is a  palpable  fact, that
but little substantial advances have been made towards  the completion  of
this undertaking; and that, in our opinion, it will take  considerably more than
twelve months with even the greatest expedition to finish  the whole of the
work.

That the Trustees have given the contractor every  possible facility up
to the present is a matter of general knowledge, and that  gentleman's well
known ability and energy in addition, should prove, we trust, a  sufficient
guarantee that in the future every possible effort will be made to  accelerate the
progress and completion of an undertaking  which is  destined, when finished,
to prove of so much commercial advantage to  Maryport.
