SUDDEN DEATH AT MARYPORT.

We are very sorry to record this week of Mr. Thomas  BAYLIS, deputy
harbour master, which took place at his residence at an early  hour on Monday
morning last. The deceased, it appears, left his home late on  Sunday evening in
his usual health, to attend to his duties in connection with  the harbour; the
tide being full a little before midnight. About midnight the  deceased the
deceased was suddenly seized with illness, and in consequence had  to be conveyed
to his residence, where he died shortly after his arrival.

Mr. BAYLIS, who was well known and highly  respected, had been in the
employ of the Trustees for about twenty-five years.  When the Elizabeth Dock was
opened in 1857,  he was appointed dock gateman,  and having in that capacity
given every satisfaction to his employers, he was  subsequently  promoted to
the office of deputy harbour master - an office  which he filled to the
satisfaction of the Trustees and with credit to  himself.

The deceased was 59 years of age. As a mark of  respect for his memory
the ships in the harbour had their colours half mast high  on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon  at the cemetery,
and the remains of the deceased, who was a member of the  "Trevelyan" Lodge of
Good Templars, were followed to the grave by the other  members of the lodge.
