ACCIDENT TO HER MAJESTY'S SHIP

"EDINBURGH"

An accident occurred on Tuesday to her Majesty's ship, "Edinburgh," a first class iron clad which was launched at Pembroke on Saturday. She was, in the afternoon, being towed by two Government steam tugs from one part of Pembroke Harbour to another, when she grounded on a shoal known as the "Dockyard Bank," where she remained fast for three hours, and was ultimately got off and towed to the dockyard to be examined. It is feared her bottom has sustained serious injury.

DEATHS FROM DRUNKENNESS.

Particulars of the numbers of deaths from drunkenness in different countries has been published.

In England and Wales, from 1877 to 1879 there were 3,190 from intemperance, being an average of 2.04 per 1,000.

In Scotland, from 1875 to 1876 the average was 3.29 per 1,000.

In Italy in 1881, 1.65 per 1,000

In Belgium and Switzerland, 3. 13 per 1,000 (years 1875-76 and 1876-77

In Norway, 1875-78, 2.36 per 1,000

In New York 1872, 12.8 per 1,000

In Sweden, 1877-78, 6.25 per 1,000.

AGRARIAN OUTRAGES IN IRELAND.

Returns recently issued from the Irish Constabulary Office as Parliamentary papers show that the total number of agrarian outrages reported to the constabulary was 479 in January and 407 in February last, a decrease of 72. Of the total, threatening letters accounted for 290 outrages in January and 253 in February.

The number of murders decreased three in January to one in February, and there is a general decrease under most of the other headings. Clare is the most disturbed county, being responsible for 41 outrages in January and 42 in February. The South Riding of Tipperary and the two Ridings of Galway come next to Clare.
