PETTY SESSIONS

COCKERMOUTH

_____

AN APPLICATION.

At the Cockermouth Police Court, on Monday, Mr. T. C. BURN, solicitor, Cockermouth, said he had an application to make to the Bench, arising out of a School Board case.

On the 6th of February last, an attendance order was made upon John SEWELL, and he not having complied with it, on the 6th March following he was committed to the Industrial School. The warrant was made out and served, and he had a letter from Mr. WILLIAMS, the superintendent, to say that it was too short a time to send a boy for, as when he reached the age of 14 years all school authority will cease; and he had instructions not to receive any boy into the school for such a short time.

He had now to apply to the Bench to amend the order for the boy to remain until he was 16.

The Clerk: Where is the lad?

Mr. BURN: He is at school at present.

The Chairman said that as neither of the magistrates who made the order was present, he thought they must adjoin it for a week. The Clerk would give due notice, and if they were not there next week, the Bench would decide the application. He thought it would be hardly courteous to those magistrates to decide the case now.
