MARYPORT POLICE COURT SMUGGLING. At the Maryport Police Court on Monday last Jonathan THOMPSON, sail maker, and Patrick MARSFIELD, labourer, were charged with smuggling - the former 2lbs. and the latter 1lb of tobacco, at Maryport on Sunday, the 19th inst. At the same time Thomas MATTHEWS and Edward MURPHY, seamen on board the s.s. City of Hamburg, were charged with having imported the 3lbs of tobacco. The defendants all pleaded guilty. Mr. BUCKLEY, the Collector of Customs, appeared to prosecute, and pressed the case against the seamen. Mr. James Wilson OGLE, out-door Custom House Officer, stated that he saw the defendants, THOMPSON and MANSFIELD on the Shipping-brow on Sunday, and he suspected they had goods in their possession liable to pay customs duty. On asking them if this was so they denied it, but afterwards admitted having some tobacco which they said they had got from some sailors belonging to the City of Hamburg, when they pointed out MATTHEWS and MURPHY as the persons from whom they received the tobacco. The defendants were fined as follows: THOMPSON, 17s 8d; MANSFIELD, 9s 8d; MATTHEWS, £1 13s 4d; and MURPHY, 17s 8d., including costs. ****** |
