MARYPORT.

THE LATE SHIPWRECK.
     A Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the Briton - which was wrecked a short time since near our harbour, and all hands drowned - will commence this morning at Athenaeum, Maryport.

 LOCAL PETITIONS TO PARLIAMENT.
     In the House of Commons, on Monday, petitions were presented by Mr. D. AINSWORTH from the meeting of the inhabitants at Maryport in favour of the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts.

 MARYPORT LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY.
     On Tuesday evening a lecture in connection with this Society was delivered in the George-street School-room, by Mr. Thomas THOMPSON, on "Cumberland, Past and Present." There was a good attendance of members and friends. Mr. Wilfrid HINE presided, and in a few appropriate remarks introduced Mr. THOMPSON. At the close of the lecture. Mr. R. ADAIR moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer. Mr. F. WALKER seconded the motion, which was supported by Mr. W. H. ECKERSLEY, and passed unanimously.  Mr. THOMPSON suitably acknowledged the compliment, and the meeting concluded.

 LECTURE AT FLIMBY.
     On Friday evening a lecture was delivered in the Public Hall, Flimby, on the work of the British and Foreign  Bible Society, by Mr. E. LISTER, of Newcastle-on-Tyne.
     The Rev. S. SCOTT presided. The lecture was illustrated by a series of coloured views, produced by means of a powerful tri-plexion lantern. Mr. LISTER afterwards exhibited a series of comic slides.

 PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL.
     On Sunday week special sermons were preached in this chapel by the Rev. J. EASTWOOD, pastor. The services were in connection with the circuit missions, and were continued on Sunday last, when the Rev. D. EADES occupied the pulpit in the afternoon.
     On Monday evening a home missionary meeting was held in the chapel. In the absence of Mr. Alfred HINRE, Mr. J. FAULDER presided. The Rev. J. EASTWOOD gave an interesting abstract of the history of Primitive Methodism during the last 70 years.
     The Revs. H. C. BAILEY (Baptist) and D. EADES (Presbyterian) delivered appropriate addresses. The meeting was also briefly addressed by Messrs. MOSSOP and BURROW.
