LATEST TELEGRAMS. ********** A NEW DOCK FOR SILLOTH. The directors of the North British Railway Company have advertised for tenders for the construction of a new wet dock at Silloth. The last day for receiving tenders is stated to be the 19th of April, so and early commencement may be expected. There is great rejoicing in Silloth in consequence. ********** CHANNEL BALLOON TRIP. The Central News Dover correspondent telegraphed yesterday: - Colonel BURNABY started on a Channel Balloon trip at ten o'clock this morning. The balloon, which had been inflated at Buckland Works, rose steadily to an altitude of about one mile. The weather is fine and the wind favourable. The ballonn is one of WRIGHT's, with a capacity for holding 36,000 feet of gas. A telegram from Dover at 10-40 yesterday morning says:- Colonel BURNABY's balloon is making excellent headway in a southerly direction, and is now visible, being about mid-channel. He expects to travel 20 miles an hour, and to reach the French coast between Paris and Boulogne. ********** A NEW COMET. The astronomer-Royal announces that a comet has been discovered in America, travelling in a north-easterly direction - bright, with a tail. ********** CAMBRIDGE CLASSICAL LIST. The Cambridge Classical List was published yesterday morning. Mr. Thomas TUCKER, St. John's College, Petsford, Northampton, is the first classic. ****** ATTEMPT TO STEAL JEWELLERY. An attempt was made on Wednesday evening by two men to steal Lady WENTERTON's jewellery, at Up Park, Petersfield. The police captured one man and the other escaped. **********
LATEST TELEGRAMS. ********** THE BANK RATE. The Bank rate was reduced to three per cent yesterday. ********** JUMBO. Jumbo reached St. Katherine's Dock at five o'clock yesterday morning, having several restless fits on the journey. In Gray's Inn the wheel was in difficulties, and the elephant struggled violently at the dock gates; the friction caused the wheel to ignite, but the fire was promptly extinguished, though causing considerable alarm. After some hours work the elephant and box were slung into the barge for transmission to the American liner. Jumbo has several gashes on the head, from which blood slowly trickles, the result of his struggles. A telegram from the Central News yesterday afternoon says:- The barge, Clarence, with Jumbo on board, was towed at 12-30 to Millwall docks. American flags were flying and crowds had gathered at every point along the river. Jumbo was vociferously cheered off Wapping. Off Wapping he became very restless, ramming his head with terrific force against the bars in front of his box. SCOTT, his keeper, was however, able to pacify him, and the remainder of the voyage to Millwall, which was reached about two o'clock, passed without incident. On the barge being made fast in Millwall Docks, Jumbo's box was hoisted on shore by a large crane for transhipment. He was then fed by an admiring crowd. The total weight of the box and elephant is twelve tons. ten cwt. ********** HEAVY FAILURE. At the London Bankruptcy Court, yesterday, the failure was announced of Roland MATTHEW, auctioneer, City-road, London and Watford, Liabilities, £56,000. ********** THE FINCHLEY MURDER. At Highgate yesterday, John BAKER was charged with murdering Enoch CLARK, his companion in burglary, in Finchley woods. Two witnesses living in the prisoner's house spoke to the disposal of the proceeds of the robbery, and blood stained clothes. The prisoner was remanded. ********** EAST CORNWALL ELECTION. The nomination for East Cornwall has been fixed for Tuesday next, and the polling for the Friday following. Both parties express confidence. ********** THE GREEK MINISTER. Sir Peter Braila AEMENI, recently appointed Greek Minister, has gone to Paris on three week's visit. **********
