The Maryport Advertiser - 25 March, 1882

Our readers will be glad to learn that Mr John TIFFIN,
formerly of Dearham, many years light-weight champion
wrestler of England, has again succeeded in gaining first
honours at the annual sports of the Caledonian Society of
Otago, held during the first week in January last.
The Otago Witness of January 7th says that "light-weight
wrestlers in the border style rolled up in good numbers, and
a capital contest resulted in a win for TIFFIN over his
old opponent HUDSON," and that during the afternoon the
directors presented him with a gold medal, value £5
bearing the following inscription:-
"Caledonian Society of Otago, wrestling championship for 1881,
eleven stone, border style, won and held by John TIFFIN."

This medal, we understand from a letter to the champions mother,
is now on its way to a friend in Carlisle.
This is the third year in succession in which this tough old veteran
has "grassed" his men in the Antipodean sports.
He has, in addition to the society's gold medal awarded each year,
thrice received the sum of £10, or £30 altogher, as first prize money,
and the championship belt, valued at 30 guineas, is now indisputably
his own, according to the stipulations on the Caledonian Society.
