Page 1 of 3 Joseph MESSENGER - SHOCKING ACCIDENTA fatal accident happened on Wednesday afternoon at the new pit situated near to the West Cumberland Iron and Steel Works, and owned by Messrs MULCASTER and son. It appeared that a man named Joseph Messenger, aged 21 years, who resided at Seaton, and was employed at the pit, was working at the bottom. He was in the act of breaking a piece of coal when a large stone fell from the roof on his head and killed him on the spot. The father of the unfortunate man was working only a few yards from him, and saw the accident occur. He removed the stone and when he did so found his son dead. The body was removed to Seaton. |
